Merricat, said Constance...

I'm going to try to do this from memory; I'll have to look it up later. My bookcase is too far away for this time of the night!
Feel free to make any corrections. (This is not a spoiler, by the way--it's in one of the first chapters of the book. At least, I don't think it would be considered to be so.)

"Merricat," said Constance, "would you like a cup of tea?"
"Oh no," said Merricat, "You'll poison me!"
"Merricat," said Constance, "would you like to go to sleep?
Down in the boneyard, 10 feet deep!"

I think there's a second verse, but I can't remember it.

Hello! I'm so excited that I found this community. I noticed the picture of Merricat at the gate immediately, and feel in love with it.I grabbed it, is that OK? I know I've seen it somewhere else, but where?

WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE CASTLE has long been one of my favorite books, and Shirley one of my favorite writers. I read CASTLE when I was in high school myself, and it always stuck with me. What a fabulous story, in so many ways. I'm really excited I found this commmunity; it was completely unexpected. I didn't know there was anyone else like me who loves her work.

I enjoy all she's done, but CASTLE is without doubt my favorite. Such intense and compelling characters! I see that there is some discussion about the book in this community already, and I look forward to reading what everyone has to say about it.

Such a shame that she died so young. A great loss for us all.

(or Starr; I'll answer to either.)

The Lovely House

Mmm...I was just curious about what you all thought of The Lovely House....I can't seem to find any discussions about it on the net.

please humor me...

ok, i have a question, since all of you undoubtedly have a much deeper understanding of Shirley Jackson's work than I do...

it's probably very rudimentary and obvious, but in We Have Always Lived In The Castle, WHY did Merricat kill her family?

at first I thought it was just (simply put) a result of her mischievous nature, but then I thought, perhaps it was part of her obsessive/compulsive desire to protect Constance, but.. from what?.... and then i thought.. maybe she was just completely insane, and then i realized.. I don't really have any idea!

so, what are your thoughts?

(and please forgive my naivete.)

ps. did any of you notice the icon for this community? it's an image of Merricat at her gate. i thought it was very spooky and most delightful. :>
